The picture below shows Pillar Point Harbor and Pillar Point with the Air Force Station on top. This is a missile tracking site. At the foot of the bluff, out to sea, the famous Mavericks surfing contest is held (almost) every year. The beach at the foot of the bluff can be treacherous. Due to a number of people getting hurt by a few large waves during the 2010 event, the 2011 Mavericks will be closed to the public.
